The Incredible Health Benefits of CBD’s
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol to give it its technical name, comes from the cannabis (hemp) plant and was first discovered by Raphael Mechoulam in Israel back in 1964.
Up until that time, scientists had been unable to isolate this abundant compound; they had found other compounds called cannabinoids (CBD’s), but THC had so far alluded them. So, its discovery was a very big find which launched the 32-year old scientist’s very successful future career.
As it turns out, it’s not only THC which is of great interest from cannabis, but the CBD’s themselves. CBD’s are a structural isomer of THC which means that they have exactly the same chemical composition, but the atoms are arranged slightly differently. There’s a ring of atoms which can be either open or closed; if the ring is open then it is CBD and if the ring is closed then it is THC. If you speak with any organic chemist it is actually possible to covert one to the other using strong acid.
So, CBD’s were actually known about longer than THC, but it is only in more recent years that we have come to appreciate their many incredible health benefits. These include, but are not limited to; excellent anti-seizure properties, anti-cancer properties, pain relieving properties and moderating the effects of THC when co-administered.
Their anti-cancer effects are so profound that many leading cancer research groups are now adding CBD’s to their standard chemotherapy regimes of treatment with excellent results. CBD’s have also been hailed as a new treatment to prevent diabetic neuropathy which is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. They help to protect nerves from damage.
